What are NIST 800 53 Controls?

The National Institute of Standards and Technology released Special Publication 800-53 entitled, “Recommended Security Controls for Federal Information Systems” in 2005. It is a set of guidelines for federal agencies to follow in order to maintain the highest level of IT security. There have been several updates to the catalog over the years, with the latest being published in September of 2020. It can be found here.
